Mostly because Canada is allowing Chinese vehicle imports, which US auto industry is not happy about. There's also some pressure from US video streaming producers and distributors, after Canada expanded regulations for television and movie production into streaming video platforms.

Us/Canada had a nice free trade deal signed by the current prez in his first term. Pity said prez is ignoring it. Hasn’t left the agreement, just ignoring it. And nobody bothers to point that out and how he’s breaking us law to do so (ratified treaty).

In Bob Woodward's book on the first Trump presidency, Trump shows a fixation with trade deficits and trade imbalances. His cabinet would try to explain that the US having a trade imbalance with South Korea (one of the topics in the book) was expected, and he had to consider the defense and intelligence agreements as part of that. Trump would not have it – he was described as obsessively focused on the trade imbalance alone, believing it made the US look weak.

White House staff took to sneaking into the Oval Office to remove draft letters and agreements from his desk before he could sign them, so he couldn't ruin trade deals like KORUS or NAFTA over his misgivings. This time around he has obviously learned he should only have yes men in the cabinet.

Do we even export any dairy to the US? I'd assume most of the auto stuff is parts not complete product, so banning that will probably just make everything more expensive for everyone.

The terms customs uses are completely unrelated to normal human words for things. They have a 21-page document (https://www.cbp.gov/sites/default/files/assets/documents/202...) describing the difference between a bolt and a screw. It starts off by citing the regulation differentiating them by intended use, then spends the rest of the document differentiating them solely by looks.

Motorcycles, not motor vehicles. Lots of cars and trucks go both ways across the border. Motorcycles is a lot smaller trade, mostly done by Bombardier: those three wheeles bikes popular with seniors. Trump hates Bombardier, they had the temerity to compete with Boeing.

These tariffs are counter to the Canadian tariffs on Harley and Indian if I had to guess.

Carney is one of them few (if there are any) leaders of Western countries who is actually genuinely popular and has a very high approval so he does have a lot of leeway to do what he thinks is best.
