I wonder if Nintendo will ever cave and start putting out official PC versions. I haven't bought a console in decades, but I have strong nostalgia towards some of those older games.

There are tons of these games that 100% are already pirated and available online - why not just officially release them and start getting some revenue out of it. Some of these titles are going to get harder and harder to access as the official consoles and carts rot and that is a REAL shame. I would by it almost anyway they wanted to sell it too. Stand alone executables, straight ripped ROMs, whatever.

I think the nostaligic crowd that would play these older games would more than likely pay for them, and being as they're already widely available (if not extremely sus downloads), there wouldn't be much incentive to redistribute them.

I feel like part of the "magic" they continue to capture is how they decided to run their business with the hardware they create. I feel like it helps keep the brand of Nintendo from changing to far out of their control; while also anyone hacking Nintendo hardware and games can always be seen as exactly that hackers oppose to say a PC game released by Nintendo where the games would simply be modded.

Also the nostalgic crowd is already eating up everything they put out... What a strange world it would be to start buying Mario, Zelda and Metroid games on steam. that 30% cut from steam just isn't something they're willing to give up I think.

If you’re interested but don’t want a console, check out the N64 recompilation scene. People recompile N64 games natively for PC and enhance them.

The answer is no, Nintendo will never do that so long as they are making consoles. The whole point is to keep you in their controlled marketplace, and the PC is the opposite of that.

Nintendo’s business model very frequently involves re-selling you the same games.

Case in point: the Wii U virtual console. If you bought into that, you didn’t get to keep those games to play on the next console. They still work on your Wii U but it’s a dead end.

For Switch, their selection of classic console games are tied to the online subscription.

That said, I wouldn’t call it a horrendous deal despite somewhat of a cynical business model. The positive of this is that Nintendo’s whole model depends on generally making very high quality games, since you can’t sell bad games over and over again.

If you haven’t bought a console in years, the Nintendo Switch 2 is an excellent choice. It can be used on the go or at home.

That said, my PC certainly gets more use, and for exclusively classic gameplay emulation is still the way to go.
