Thomas Larsen is the one behind the recent Reuters article and website that "discovered" the OpenAI wiki posting incident. I say "discovered", because him and Daniel obviously have insiders who are sharing information with them, and then getting paid to leak this information.

Most were simply bought by billionaires who then made them be how they like them. Guardian is actually an exception here (not being owned by a billionaire).

But like ... traditional media were intentionally destroyed and made this way by ... tech industry.

Did you read the article and the X thread? It is all tied to Anthropic. "Propaganda" is a more accurate description than "statements" when we're talking about paying bribes to religious NGO's for theological framing around AI and as a means for political connections and sway.

Hold on; GiveWell Labs/OpenPhil/Coefficient Giving is older (2011) than Anthropic, the AI safety folks are way older than OpenPhil (~90s, older sci-fi), and it stretches the imagination to claim that your product will kill everyone in order to sell more of it. That's conspiracy theory territory. Even cigarette companies pretended to be harmless.

I don't think it's a secret that the safety folks (including "doomers") are funding a lot of anti-AGI articles and researchers. But they're generally at odds with the big labs (Anthropic, OpenAI, Alphabet, Meta) about the basic concept. The Yudkowsky branch believe AGI/ASI is incredibly likely to take over and end life on Earth. The major labs think the worst that can happen is a few more publicly embarrassing hacks but that anything truly dangerous is a distant threat. ~most safety researchers fall somewhere in the middle.

Anthropic started as a mid-safety reaction to the way OpenAI was being operated but is by no means close to the "doomer" end of the spectrum.

There is funding for pro-AI as well, but the overwhelming majority of it is being funnelled into the doomer movement. Anthropic in particular is funding the opposite of pro-AI narratives and to promote the idea that AI is going to kill everyone unless it's heavily regulated. They've been trying for regulatory capture since the very beginning.

The Future of Life has funded 30 projects to develop AI safety content since launching a digital media accelerator last year. The application form on the nonprofit's website says it plans to spend $100,000 a month.

Anthropic's perspective is that if the open-weight models and open-source ecosystem is allowed to flourish, they'll lose trillions of dollars. They're desperate to do anything they can to prevent it from happening.

I think this assertion needs evidence as it seems more probable to me that the rich are anti-religious. In any country where Christianity is the main religion it is a very unattractive belief for the rich (the "eye of the needle", "root of all evil" and "give all you have to the poor" ethos). Most other religions are suspicious of wealth too (to a Buddhist it is an attachment) In the UK we had a recent prime minister (Tony Blair) who concealed his religious beliefs. In the US JD Vance has been illustrating how difficult it is for a person in power to reconcile that with mainstream religious belief.

Of course you preface all this with the assumption that you are right about reality yourself which is a whole other argument.

Prosperity gospel is a thing. It preaches the literal opposite - god rewards good behavior by prosperity. Consequently, if you are rich, you are doing the right thing.

No, US JD Vance is an illustration that if you convert to most conservative openly fascist branch of Catholicism, then try to abuse Catholicism for your political project, you will get into conflict with Pope who is conservative but definitely absolutely not fascists nor racist. And pope has to respond, because conservative Catholicism was already used this way in the past with ugly results.

JD Vance does not have "mainstream religious belief". And it is quite possible to reconcile "mainstream religious belief" with power - just not the vision of power Trump and Thiel and conservatives use.

Talking "false ideas about life and reality" like there's any way to test religious views with science. Spoiler alert, science explicitly ignores any supernatural effects because a theory where anything can happen is useless for explaining what happens most of the time. Not because it claims they don't exist.

Just say you're an atheist and move on, or say nothing because it's irrelevant to OP and you made a new account just to post this. 90% of people you meet will have zero problems with you being one. This "religion is dumb" thing just plays into stereotypes that all non religious people are annoying Redditors. It's pure self sabotage.
