Mr. Lai has often been lauded as one of the strongest defenders of free thought in Hong Kong, publishing under the Apple Daily even as the Chinese government took back control.

Lai was one of the richest men in Hong Kong, starting out as a child laborer in the textile industry and self made working his way up to owning the clothing brand Giordano. He founded a publishing enterprise after finding his fortune in the textile business. He was first arrested in 2020 as the Chinese government started to grip power in HK.
